You can walk the cobblestone streets of ancient cities stand in awe of architectural marvels and lose yourself in world-class museums. Many tours feature expert local guides who share compelling stories and insights that you wouldn’t find in a guidebook bringing history to life right before your eyes. You can explore the world’s most significant historical locations by browsing the UNESCO World Heritage Centre list for inspiration.
Savour local food and wine
If you believe the best way to understand a culture is through its food a culinary tour will delight your senses. These tours go beyond just dining in restaurants. They invite you into the local food scene with hands-on experiences like cooking classes in a country farmhouse visits to bustling local markets and tastings at family-run wineries. Picture yourself sipping port in the Douro Valley or learning the secrets of authentic paella in Spain. It’s a delicious way to travel creating memories that you can even recreate in your own kitchen back home.
Focus on wellness and relaxation
Sometimes the goal of travel is simply to rest and rejuvenate. Wellness tours are created for just that purpose. They offer a peaceful escape from the demands of daily life combining scenic beauty with activities that soothe the mind body and spirit. Your itinerary might include gentle yoga sessions luxurious spa treatments or simply ample free time to relax by the sea with a good book. Because every detail is managed for you it’s a truly restorative experience allowing you to return home feeling refreshed and renewed.
Seek out soft adventures
If your ideal tour involves fresh air and stunning landscapes a soft adventure could be the perfect choice. These tours are for those who love to be active but prefer comfortable and accessible experiences over strenuous challenges. You might find yourself on a guided walk through Ireland’s green hills a scenic boat trip through dramatic fjords or a wildlife-spotting excursion in a national park. These trips are a wonderful way to connect with nature and share the experience with fellow travellers who appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors.
Give back while you travel
For many travellers making a positive impact on the places they visit is an important part of the experience. Some tours offer opportunities to connect with local communities in a meaningful way. This could involve visiting a social enterprise that supports local artisans learning about important conservation projects or engaging with a community-led initiative. These experiences offer a deeper understanding of the local culture and a chance to support sustainable practices that protect the destination for future generations. It’s a way to ensure your travels are not only memorable but also responsible.
How to Choose the Right Tour Company
Finding the right tour operator can feel like searching for the perfect travel companion. You want a company that understands your style anticipates your needs and handles all the details so you can simply immerse yourself in the experience. The best fit for you will depend on your personal preferences for group size activity level and the balance between planned excursions and free time. A great tour company acts as your trusted guide from the moment you book until you return home with a suitcase full of memories.
Think about what matters most to you when you’re travelling. Is it the comfort of a first-class hotel after a day of exploring? The peace of mind that comes with having an expert handle all the logistics? Or perhaps it’s the joy of sharing a meal with new friends who are just as curious about the world as you are. When you start comparing options look for a company whose values align with your own. Reading reviews from fellow travellers can offer wonderful insight but also trust your intuition. The right company will make you feel excited and cared for every step of the way.
Look for expert guides and attentive Group Gurus
The people leading your tour can transform a great trip into an unforgettable one. Look for companies that work with both local guides and a dedicated tour leader. Local guides bring a destination to life with their deep knowledge of the history art and culture. They can show you hidden gems you’d never find on your own and share personal stories that connect you to the place. Your main tour leader or Group Guru is your go-to person for everything else. They are your confidant problem-solver and cheerleader ensuring the tour runs smoothly and everyone feels included and supported. Their presence provides a wonderful sense of security and camaraderie.
Consider the group size
The number of people on your tour significantly shapes your experience. Some companies specialize in very small groups while others travel with a full coach. There’s no right or wrong answer it’s all about what feels comfortable for you. A smaller group can feel more intimate but a slightly larger one offers more opportunities to meet a diverse range of people. At Approach Tours we find that a maximum of 30 travellers strikes the perfect balance. It’s large enough to create a fun social dynamic but small enough that you never feel like just a face in the crowd. This size allows for both lively group dinners and quiet personal moments.
Check for all-inclusive value
The term “all-inclusive” can mean different things to different companies so it’s important to understand exactly what’s covered. A truly all-inclusive tour bundles everything into one price including international flights high-quality accommodations most meals all excursions and even gratuities. This approach offers incredible peace of mind especially for a solo traveller. You won’t have to worry about hidden costs or constantly reach for your wallet. When comparing tours look past the initial price and review what’s included. Often a tour that seems more expensive upfront actually provides better value because it covers expenses you would otherwise have to pay for out of pocket.
Prioritize safety and on-tour support
Your safety and well-being should be any tour company’s top priority. Travelling with a reputable operator means you have a built-in support system from start to finish. Look for companies that provide a dedicated Group Guru who travels with you throughout the entire tour. This person is your point of contact for any questions or concerns that may arise. It’s also reassuring to know that there’s a support team available 24/7 back home. For solo travellers this on-tour support is invaluable. It allows you to relax and enjoy your adventure knowing that an expert is always there to help.
Review the accommodations
Where you rest your head at night has a big impact on your overall travel experience. A great tour company selects hotels that are not only comfortable and clean but also centrally located making it easy for you to explore during your free time. Before booking take a look at the types of accommodations the company uses. Are they well-regarded first-class hotels or charming local inns? As a solo traveller you’ll also want to check the policy for single rooms. Many companies offer the option to pay a single supplement for a private room which guarantees your own space and privacy throughout the tour.
Ask about itinerary flexibility
A well-crafted itinerary is the heart of any guided tour but it’s also important to have some room for spontaneity. The best tours strike a balance between iconic must-see sights and unstructured free time. This allows you to join the group for planned activities but also gives you the freedom to wander through a market linger in a museum or simply sip a coffee at a sidewalk café. When reviewing an itinerary check for built-in leisure time. This flexibility lets you tailor the experience to your own interests and travel at a pace that feels right for you ensuring you return home feeling refreshed not rushed.
What’s Included in Your Tour Price?
Understanding the costs associated with a guided tour is the first step toward a truly relaxing vacation. When you know exactly what your payment covers you can put your wallet away and focus on the experience. A transparent price means no surprise expenses just pure enjoyment. The key is to look beyond the initial number and see the incredible value packed into a single price.
Know what your price covers
The term “all-inclusive” can mean different things to different tour operators. Some may include flights but not meals while others cover accommodations but not excursions. It’s essential to read the fine print to understand what’s part of the package and what you’ll need to budget for separately. At Approach Tours we pride ourselves on being Canada’s only truly all-inclusive international tour company. This means your international flights meals first-class hotels all sightseeing activities transportation and even gratuities are included. You can step onto the plane knowing that from start to finish every detail is thoughtfully managed for you.
Explore single room options
As a solo traveller you’ll often encounter something called a “single supplement.” This is an additional fee for having a hotel room to yourself. Because hotel room pricing is based on double occupancy this supplement covers the fixed cost of the room. Many tour operators offer a choice. You can pay the supplement to guarantee your own private space for the entire tour. Alternatively some companies offer a roommate matching service. If you’re open to sharing a room this is a great way to avoid the extra fee and you might even make a new friend. You can always ask if this is an option when you join a tour as a solo traveller.
Discover early booking perks
The early bird truly gets the best selection. Popular tours and departure dates can fill up months in advance especially for solo travellers as there are often a limited number of spots available. Booking early not only secures your place but also gives you the widest choice of dates and itineraries. It provides peace of mind and allows you more time to prepare for your adventure. Once you’ve reserved your spot you can relax and start dreaming about the incredible experiences that await. Take a look at our list of upcoming tours to find your next destination and consider booking ahead to avoid disappointment.
Think about overall value not just price
It’s easy to compare tours based on price alone but the real measure is value. A slightly higher price often translates to a significantly better experience. Consider what’s happening behind the scenes: a dedicated Group Guru attending to your needs carefully selected first-class hotels and authentic cultural experiences you couldn’t arrange on your own. The price reflects the quality of these services the expertise of your guides and the security of knowing everything is handled. When you invest in a tour you’re paying for a seamless memorable and enriching adventure. The glowing traveller reviews often speak to this incredible value far more than a price tag can.
Review your payment options
When you’re ready to make your dream trip a reality you’ll find several ways to book. While many people use large online travel agencies booking directly with a tour operator offers a more personal touch. When you connect with the company that is actually running the tour you get expert answers to your specific questions and build a relationship with the team that will be taking care of you. The process is usually straightforward typically involving a deposit to secure your spot with the final payment due closer to your departure date. Understanding the process for booking your tour ensures a smooth start to your travel planning.

By organizing your documents securing the right insurance and packing thoughtfully you are paving the way for a seamless transition from home to your dream destination.

Organize your travel documents
First things first let’s get your paperwork in order. Check your passport’s expiry date. Many countries require it to be valid for at least six months after your planned departure date. Make both physical and digital copies of your passport visa flight confirmations and tour itinerary. Leave one copy with a trusted friend or family member at home and keep the digital copies in a secure cloud service or your email. Once you arrive at your hotel it’s a good practice to store your passport and other important papers in the room’s safe. You can find official travel advice and advisories from the Government of Canada to stay informed about your destination’s entry requirements.
Select the right travel insurance
Travel insurance is not just a suggestion it’s an absolute must for international travel. A comprehensive plan is your safety net for the unexpected. Before you purchase a policy ensure it provides adequate coverage for medical emergencies including emergency evacuation and repatriation which can be incredibly expensive. Look for plans that also cover trip cancellation or interruption lost luggage and travel delays. Read the policy details carefully to understand what is and isn’t covered. Having the right insurance means you can relax and enjoy every moment of your tour knowing you’re protected against unforeseen circumstances. This is a small investment for significant peace of mind.
Pack smart for your destination
The key to a comfortable trip is smart packing. Start by checking the typical weather for your destination during the time you’ll be there. Dressing in layers is almost always a good strategy allowing you to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable as you’ll be doing plenty of exploring. Create a checklist that includes any prescription medications you need (in their original containers) essential toiletries and electronics like your phone camera and a portable power bank. Packing cubes can be a lifesaver for keeping your suitcase organized and it’s always wise to leave a little extra room for souvenirs.
Plan for your health and safety
Your well-being is the top priority. Schedule a visit with your doctor or a travel clinic a few weeks before your departure to discuss any recommended vaccinations or health precautions for your destination. It’s also a great idea to share your detailed itinerary with family or friends back home so they know your general whereabouts. While travelling with a group provides an incredible layer of security it’s still important to be aware of your surroundings. Simple steps like dressing to blend in with the locals and keeping an eye on your belongings go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
Decide how you’ll stay in touch
Figuring out how you’ll communicate with loved ones back home and new friends on your tour will help you feel connected. Check with your mobile provider about international roaming plans or consider purchasing an eSIM for travel for a more affordable data option. Many tour operators also create private online groups for travellers on a specific tour. Joining this group before you leave is a fantastic way to “meet” your fellow travellers ask questions and build a sense of community before you even pack your bags. It can make that first day feel less like meeting strangers and more like greeting friends.
Tips for an Unforgettable Experience
You’ve chosen your destination and your tour is booked. Now the real fun begins. While your Group Guru and local guides handle all the logistics you can focus on making your solo tour a truly life-changing experience. The beauty of a group tour is that it provides a perfect framework for adventure. You have a built-in community of fellow explorers and a thoughtfully planned itinerary. Within that structure you have the freedom to shape your own personal story. The most memorable tours are often a result of the little things: the conversations you start the quiet moments you take for yourself and the spontaneous discoveries you make along the way. Think of your tour as a canvas. We provide the paint and brushes but you are the artist. By being open curious and engaged you can turn a great vacation into an unforgettable one filled with rich memories and lasting friendships. These tips will help you make the most of every moment from the day you depart to long after you’ve returned home.
Connect with your fellow travellers
One of the greatest joys of group travel is the people you meet. You’ll be sharing this adventure with like-minded individuals many of whom are also travelling solo. Be open to striking up a conversation on the coach during a meal or while waiting for an activity to begin. You already have a powerful shared interest: a love for travel. Special activities like a hands-on cooking class or a scenic sunset cruise are designed to be wonderful icebreakers helping you get to know your fellow travellers in a relaxed setting. Don’t be shy about suggesting a coffee during free time or asking someone to take your photo. These small gestures can blossom into wonderful friendships.
Balance group activities with me-time
Even the most social butterfly needs a moment to recharge. A well-paced tour includes a healthy mix of planned excursions and free time for you to explore on your own. This balance is essential. Use your “me-time” to wander through a colourful local market find a quiet café to people-watch or simply relax back at the hotel. This is your opportunity to process your experiences and pursue your personal interests at your own pace. Honouring your need for both social connection and quiet reflection will ensure you stay energized and present throughout your entire tour.
Immerse yourself in the local culture
To truly experience a destination you have to dive in with all your senses. Your local guides are your key to unlocking a deeper understanding of the places you visit. Ask them questions about their lives their traditions and their favourite local spots. Be adventurous with your food choices and try regional specialties you can’t find at home. Learning a few basic phrases in the local language like “hello” and “thank you” is a simple gesture of respect that goes a long way. True cultural immersion happens when you step off the beaten path and engage with the heart of a place.
Capture your favourite moments
Your tour will be filled with moments you’ll want to remember forever. While photos are a wonderful way to document your travels consider other ways to capture the feeling of a place. You might keep a travel journal to jot down your thoughts and observations each day. Perhaps you enjoy sketching the architecture or collecting small meaningful souvenirs like a painted tile or a local spice. Remember to capture the people too. A group photo in front of a stunning landmark or a candid shot of new friends laughing over dinner can become your most cherished mementos. These are the images that tell the full story of your adventure.
Keep in touch after the tour
The connections you make on tour don’t have to end when you board your flight home. In the final days of your trip make a point to exchange contact information with the new friends you’ve made. Many travellers find that the bonds formed while exploring the world together are strong and lasting. Following up with an email or connecting on social media is a great way to share photos and reminisce about your shared experiences. These new friendships can enrich your life long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase and may even lead to a travel companion for your next great adventure.
Ready to Book? Here’s How
Once you’ve found a tour that sparks your imagination the next step is making it a reality. The booking process should be just as seamless and supportive as the tour itself. Thinking through the details now ensures you can relax and simply anticipate the adventure ahead. From picking the perfect departure date to understanding the support you’ll receive before you even pack your bags here’s what to consider as you prepare to reserve your spot.
Choose the best time to travel
Timing is everything when planning your perfect solo tour. Booking early is one of the best things you can do. Not only does it give you something wonderful to look forward to but it also secures your spot especially on popular tours that fill up quickly. Many tour operators have a limited number of spaces for solo travellers and these are often the first to go. Planning ahead also gives you more options for flights and allows you to take advantage of early booking perks. Consider travelling during the shoulder seasons—spring and fall—which often boast pleasant weather fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Read traveller reviews with a keen eye
Hearing from others who have gone before you can provide incredible peace of mind. While travelling alone can seem daunting at first a group tour removes the stress of navigating a new country on your own. Look for reviews from other solo travellers to get a feel for their experience. Did they feel included in the group? Was the Group Guru attentive to everyone’s needs? Did they feel safe and supported throughout the tour? Reading these first-hand accounts on a company’s website or independent review sites can help you find a community of like-minded people and confirm you’ve made the right choice.
Ask these key questions before booking
Don’t be shy about reaching out to the tour operator with your questions. A great company will be happy to provide all the information you need to feel comfortable and confident. Many travellers ask “Can I join a tour as a solo or single traveller?” and the answer should always be a resounding yes. We love welcoming solo travellers into our groups. You can also ask about the typical group size and demographic the pacing of the itinerary and the specifics of the single room option. Getting clarity on these details helps ensure the tour is a perfect match for your travel style.
Understand the reservation process
The booking process itself should be straightforward. Typically it involves selecting your tour and date placing a deposit to secure your spot and then paying the final balance closer to the departure date. One common question involves the single supplement. This isn’t a penalty for travelling solo. Instead it covers the cost of having a private room which is priced for two occupants. A transparent tour operator will clearly explain this and other costs. Understanding the reservation details upfront means there are no surprises just smooth sailing from booking to departure.
Learn about pre-departure support
Excellent service begins long before your tour does. Once you’ve booked you should feel completely supported. Look for a company that provides comprehensive pre-departure information including detailed itineraries packing suggestions and flight details. You should have a dedicated contact for any questions that pop up. Knowing that an expert Group Guru will be with you on tour and that the company offers around-the-clock support provides an invaluable sense of security. This allows you to focus on the excitement of the upcoming experience knowing all the logistics are in capable hands.
