5 Ways to Beat the Heat on Tour

Hot tips to stay cool

Staying cool isn’t just about comfort; it’s the key to soaking up every magical moment on tour!

Imagine the sun blazing over Marrakech’s bustling souks, golden rays dancing off the ancient pyramids, or tropical humidity wrapping around you as you cruise through the turquoise waters of Ha Long Bay. These places radiate beauty, but their warmth is something you can’t ignore. The heat in countries like Morocco, Egypt, Thailand, and Vietnam wraps itself around you like a part of their story—warm, golden, and alive. It’s all part of the adventure!

But let’s be real—embracing these hot spots requires a cool strategy. With proper planning—like wearing lightweight clothing, and staying hydrated—you can embrace these extraordinary destinations with comfort and ease, making the most of your journey without being hindered by the heat.

Please note, these tips have helped us stay cool on tour, but what works for us might not work for you. Follow the advice that resonates with you and do what feels right for your body! With that being said…

Here are our 5 golden rules to help you beat the heat while on tour:

#1 Dress (& Pack) Smart

Cover up

It might seem counterintuitive at first, but covering up is better than baring it all when it comes to staying cool. Long-sleeved shirts and pants made from light fabrics, like cotton or linen, keep the sun off your skin and help you regulate your body temperature.

Fabrics make a difference

Choose breathable fabrics in light colours to reflect sunlight. For additional comfort, look for moisture-wicking fabrics like bamboo that pull sweat away from your skin. Avoid synthetic materials like polyester and nylon which can trap heat.

Opt for open toe

Comfortable sandals (ideally with some arch support) can be perfect when hanging out around the hotel or soaking up free time on the beach. The breathable footwear helps keep your feet cool and is perfect to slip off and on when you decide to go for a dip.

Bring a hat

Wide-brimmed hats protect your head, face, and neck from direct sunlight. They prevent sunburn and keep your noggin from overheating in the sun. Not to mention, a good hat can cover any bad hair day, so you’re guaranteed to look good in all your travel photos.

Sport your sunglasses

Stay cool and look good doing it! Choose UV-protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the harsh sun and prevent eye strain. When it’s hot and humid, the last thing you want is a headache from squinting in the sun all day.

Sunscreen is a life saver

A broad-spectrum sunscreen does more than shield you from harmful UV rays. Did you know that when your skin is sunburned, it retains more heat and can make you feel hotter overall? Wearing sunscreen actually helps your body stay cooler and better equipped to handle high temperatures.

Keep Hydration on Hand

On an Approach tour, two 500ml water bottles are included daily. But we recommend also bringing a reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotel so you’ll always have water handy.

Make your own breeze

On hot days where the air feels heavy, a hand-held fan feels like heaven on earth. Cheap fans can be found easily in countries like Vietnam or Thailand, or you can make your own by folding a piece of paper accordion-style and bunching the folds at one end as a handle. Also, consider bringing a small spray bottle to mist yourself with water!

With the right clothing choices, you’ll be focused on the sights, not sweat 😉

#2 Stay Hydrated, Stay Happy

Drinking water isn’t just a health tip—it’s your best travel companion on any tour. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up, your mind sharp, and your body cool.

Drinking water has endless benefits, but it’s not the only secret to staying hydrated. Simple swaps can also go a long way. Replace your morning coffee with an iced one to keep your body temperature down. Better yet, avoid caffeine and alcohol altogether on really hot days since they can be dehydrating.

Still need to get your caffeine fix? Don’t worry! Countries like Thailand and Vietnam have countless iced coffee and tea variations to choose from. Check out this delicious recipe for traditional Cha Yen (Thai iced tea) which will not only energize you, but cool you down as well!

#3 Diet does more than you think

What you eat can make all the difference when touring hot countries! Most (if not all) of our breakfasts on a tour are continental buffet style, letting you start your day with a sampling of local fruit, breads and eggs that will stick with you through the day. Opting for light, hydrating foods like fresh fruits and yogurt will help keep your energy up without weighing you down. Don’t forget to fuel up with electrolytes from foods like bananas or coconut water to replace what you lose in the heat.

Most of our lunches and dinners are served as pre-fixed, two and three-course meals. But while you’re out exploring during free time, or during your street food tour in Vietnam, try to avoid spicy food. These foods, while delicious, increase your body’s internal temperature. Sweating while you’re chowing down on a spicy dish also accelerates fluid and electrolyte loss, which can lead to dehydration in already hot conditions.

We also suggest carrying small, travel-friendly snacks like a piece of fruit, a handful of trail mix, or a granola bar for a quick boost of energy. These snacks combine natural sugars, carbs, and protein to keep you going without the sugar crash.

#4 Cool down before bed

A proper cool-down routine is the secret to waking up refreshed and ready to explore the next day. After a long day of sightseeing, take a lukewarm or cool shower to lower your body temperature and wash away the heat. We select 4-star hotels which offer a mix of upper-end amenities, meaning some of your hotels will be equipped with a pristine pool to splash around in after a long day of adventuring.

After you cool down, wear lightweight, breathable sleepwear and turn on the fan or air conditioning in your room to create a comfortable sleeping environment. Sipping cool water before bed can also help keep you hydrated and relaxed. For added relief from the heat, sleep with a cool compress on your forehead. By giving your body the chance to fully recharge overnight, you’ll be energized and prepared for another day of incredible adventures!

#5 Listen to your body

Even if you follow all the advice given above, you may still experience discomfort brought on by the heat. It’s no fun feeling queasy in paradise, and it’s important to listen to your body and rest when needed. While everything is included in an Approach Tour, you are welcome and encouraged to skip any activity and get the rest you need. The symptoms of heat exhaustion serve as your body’s warning signals. Recognizing these early symptoms is key to preventing heat stroke, and making sure you don’t miss out on more of the incredible experiences in store for you on tour.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion:

Feeling weak or fatigued
Dizziness
Persistent, throbbing headaches
Nausea or upset stomach
Irritability or confusion
Rapid heartbeat

If you experience any of the following symptoms, let your Group Guru know. They’ll keep a watchful eye on your situation and can provide extra help if needed.

With the right preparation, the heat will be no match for your sense of adventure!
